My 2 Tesoros do not like the beach, can't ground balance them. Granted SMF have a edge over single frequency machines at the beach when it comes to id's. However there are a couple of beaches up here in Rockport and River Basin in Newburyport that are loaded with black sand so even SMF have reduced depth much like the red clay in VA.
For beach combing in those areas I end up going back to my Seahunter.
Hunting black sand with an ib if you don't have a pi your best bet is one with true all metal (not zero mode) and listen to the threshold then take a scoop to start to reveal the target. Wonder why SMF machines don't have true all metal mode? Maybe it isn't possible with that type of circuitry and phase shift has to be corrected with dsp?
Attached a pic of the natural beaches of New England. Once you hit this stuff it's like a wall for IB machines.
