Well, Monte, I'm gonna say its a pretty neat machine. Did you see the guy in the video that designed it....... it's like Garrett hired the Incredible Hulk.... so ya I don't wanna cross that guy. Plus I think they really stepped up and put out a pretty nice machine ( testing withstanding) for the $$$
It I an attractive looking package, and they have made some improved changes and additions of some functions over the rest of the Ace series. I like the color compared with the yellowy-yellow of the Ace models. The VDI read-out looks bigger and the display, overall, is better. But some things I saw and heard still come across more like the Ace series behavior, and I therefor wonder just how well the new Ace APEX is going to perform afield. I also note that it is not going to be a very versatile Relic Hunting unit in dense iron debris until they release some smaller-size coils for it. THEN, with a proper coil mounted and detector in-hand, we can put it through the paces for both urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting as well as taking on the challenges of the really tough Relic Hunting sites we enjoy working.

Looks like the Simplex might have to take a back seat .......maybe even the Vanquish as you don't have single freq selection as the Apex has.
I haven't handled the APEX but I have used my Simplex +. I know what it can do with it's over-sized coil, like the new Garrett model, but I have a level of confidence of how it will perform once we get a good smaller-size coil for it. My Simplex + is not taking a back-seat to any competitor's unit yet, nor do I see it happening.

The Minelab Vanquish 540 I use is 'limited', I guess you could say, because it relies on the Multi-IQ SMF only and doesn't provide a selectable single-frequency selection. However, it does-what-it-does just fine for many search applications with the 5X8 DD coil, and it does provide me with some features/functions that differ from the Ace APEX. The Iron audio response is decent and functional without being a drawn-out or annoying loud response.

Both the Simplex + and Vanquish provide some settings and performance options not available on the APEX as read in their specs, and until I handle the device and know how they designed the different modes or programs.

You state you feel its not a hardcore relic machine, and I agree, but by default, that same statement can be applied to the Vanquish and Simplex. Neat machines for the money, but stay in the park. Ghost Towns might scare these machines.
The V-540 can do an 'average' or actually an 'above average' job handling most ghost town encounters. The Simplex + I feel might also do 'very good' to possibly 'above-average' also, but that's an unknown until they get a proper-size smaller coil out for it. Even my Impact w/7" Concentric is an 'above-average' Relic Hunting unit in the iron choked sections of many ghost towns, and I anticipate the Simplex + will provide very close/similar performance ... but for the most challenging conditions, none of the above rival the CoRe w/'OOR' or Relic w/5" DD coils.

I do look forward to giving the new Ace APEX a good run in urban environments and the more challenging out-of-the-way relic-type sites. Matter-of-fact, I'm making a little room for one to hang around on my den wall with the other detectors I own and use, and ride along to some enjoyable locations .... IF it truly provides some welcome improvements in performance and behavior.
