Sad, but probably true.

For several reasons--I think Whites is pretty much done/finished.----Sad to say---I started with a Whites many years ago & I hope they can survive these very trying times---but I think "the writing is on the wall".-----Dele

White's and Garrett were both early manufacturer's in the detector business, with White's just a little ahead by a few years, and in the summer of '68 I started using my first factory-built detector, a White's Ghost Towner BFO. Quite an improvement from the home-built 'kits' I used the prior three years. My next good factory-made devices were from Garrett then Fisher. Early-on, while checking out as many brands as possible, with Compass being the next maker of very good detectors, I kept a few on-hand, and almost always had at least one White's until '77. At that point I became a Garrett Dealer and seldom had any other brand until about '82.

Those were the earlier days when the metal detecting hobby was growing very rapidly. There were a lot of people out detecting everywhere, and a lot of 'local' dealers to promote the hobby, and more detecting clubs around than most newcomers today could imagine. With all the visibility an a half-dozen magazines related to the metal detecting hobby, White's was one of the better promoters. Almost as good as Garrett, but as long as I've been enjoying this great outdoor sport, Garrett has reigned supreme when it came to marketing, advertising, and promoting their products.

As we have seen the magazines die off, the clubs disband, and local dealers age and just get out of the market, it has been up to the fewer number of clubs, the on-line presence of different people who have videos or participate in hunts and events, and any other noteworthy activity to promote products. Garrett is, and has been by far, the best company to utilize good product marketing.

White's? Nope, they just haven't been there. I just can't see them trying to resurrect their slowly decaying company unless they had a good engineer or two, had a good marketing and sales coordinator, drastically adjusted their MSRP to being retail prices in-line with all the major detector makers, and put $$$ into product development and more visible marketing.

Nope, I just don't see that happening. I've been holding out hope for White's for the past decade, but only one twinkle occurred with the MX-7when they should have brought us more worthwhile, competitive lower-end to mid-level models.
