I'm pretty sure that Garrett considers the Viper coil a general search coil which is very similar to the standard coil on the AT Pro series, those on the Nokta Makro offerings, Fisher and Teknetics, the Minelab FBS & Equinox lines and many others.
I would question the sanity of these companies if they came out with a standard coil that was 13x15 for large field hunting or 5" round for 'Super trashed ghost town' hunting. The screams of displeasure from the majority of hunters wanting a general coil would be deafening. I don't see the Apex being marketed as a speciality detector and so I wouldn't expect it to be fitted with a speciality coil(s). It could be that a holiday pack or Pro pack could be marketed somewhere down the road including some speciality items, but they have to be developed first.

. I know, strange concept, right? Is there demand for these things to justify the cost of development and production? If they come out with a 5" coil and only sell 7 of them to participants of the WTHO headed to some ghost towns out west, it would reflect poorly as a business decision. Especially if the other 493 coils they made as part of the first lot sit on factory shelves until Garrett finally gives them away as part of an ADD LOSS promotion.
I fully expect some accessory coils to be brought out that fit Garretts visions for their first shot at a SMF detector. But before some criticize their standard coil, shouldnt you have a go with it in a few places and get a feel for how it performs?
Does it sort well? Does it have good depth capabilities? How does it behave with targets on the fringe of detection? How about with collocates? How does it do with deep rusty nails? How about in wet ground conditions? Bottle caps? Mineralized conditions? Ghost town conditions? How are the single frequencies compared to the MF? Does it pinpoint well? Is the Target ID spot on? Does it have a comfortable audio? Balance? EMI? Likeability? How's the charging system? Wireless headphones? There are lots of personal preferences to measure up to and remember,
only your own preferences are important. At least to you.
Of course, many of us have some preferences in common and i would think that Garrett is going to try and check as many of the common wants boxes as possible.
I'm looking forward to reading the field reports as those of you who have purchased get opportunity to take the Apex afield.
