I can grab one of my old TR's, TR-Disc. or a VLF/TR-Disc. and scrub the coil lightly on the ground and, in most situations, they will work OK. Maybe nto the best, but OK. When we progresses to all of these newer detectors starting about 25-30 years ago with higher gain, more sensitivity, and especially o larger-size coils, 'scrubbing technique' or even working the coil within a inch or so, can have a negative effect on detector performance. Especially in higher mineralized ground.
Most Operator / User manuals suggesting working a search coils about 1" off the ground to ±2" off the ground. That eliminates most of the issues of the mineralized ground warping the intense EMF near the coil, and also eliminates the double or multiple beeps when sweeping over and very close to a shallow target.
Again, we have for a smaller-size search coil to help reduce the amount of negative effect on the EMF, plus let us better handle working in and around trash, building rubble, brush, etc. We should be able to use a somewhat lower-level coil position than with the 'mid-big' 6X11 DD 'Viper' coil. It's working okay for average urban Coin Hunting, and could work for 'scouting' around for a potential location of prior activity. Then it's smaller-coil time.
