Yes I agree and usually do work my coil an inch to 2 inches off the ground. But 4 inches is a little much IMO but if it works and that's the only metal detector you have on hand at the time then do it. I'm hoping Garrett comes out with a smaller coil sooner rather than later. I really am liking the ergonomics of the Apex and would love to keep using it.
