Is a highly specialized detector always needed ? thinking

I was browsing over on Steve Herschbach's forum / detector prospector / and started perusing a post on the new coils available for the APEX, (thank you diggindeep) which interests me because I still have my APEX.

Like a number of other detectorists here, I've been doing this detecting thing for a while and have kinda picked my way thru detectors over the years to what I think works best for me in the places I hunt. I used to carry a single detector, but several years ago I broadened out to a couple/few detectors that complement each other. this was after some long talks with Monte. I can hunt a wider variety of venues now with better results.

However, another thing happens over time and that is a guy becomes critical and only wants to use when he thinks is the best for a given situation. Reading this post got me to really thinking about this. Is a highly specialized detector always needed?

Steve's thoughts start on page three and continue for a while. I'm interested to know your thoughts on his thoughts.
