Took the Reaper out for about an hour. Started to sleet here and tide was coming in so expected a short run.
In the wet sand I can run full gain without any falsing in MS mode. It has very good separation especially for a coil of it's size. I was able identify iron very well. Only good finds if you want to call them that were a couple copper pennies that were in the full scoop mark 10" +- a couple.
The area I hit has an old bath house, asphalt parking lot all broken up so there is tons of iron. Running a PI there is impossible with the iron bits.
For the towel line there is a long stretch of black sand and some clay which is the original bottom. This is where the Apex struggled no matter what coil because the ground balance range is just above the MS mode so you lose depth in MS or are tortured with falsing in MF or any of the single frequency modes. This is just the area that is brutal on VLF's in general.
Typically my work around in that area is with my Multi Kruzer in 5khz and manually ground balance it. This allows me to hear targets. Probably the only effective way to hunt that type of ground with a vlf.
My Seahunter in that area cuts clear through the black sand but at a cost of digging all the iron and lugging a 5+lb machine.
Overall the Reaper is a very good coil for beach combing but it is heavy @ 1.5lbs so it can be tiresome. Shorting the shaft so the coil is closer to your feet and using the cuff strap makes it doable. My guess the next size coil down will do pretty well and is lighter.
