Stroll in the Park

The last several days have seen sunshine, winds from the South and the release of winters’ frosty grip on one of my local old parks!
Out came my EQX800 and my recovery tools and off I went in search of an old coin or two. Except today is was raining. It was only an 80% chance of rain, but somehow or other it was 100% where I happened to be hunting.

Never mind the rain, I have a rain jacket, a hat and some gloves and a detector that is water resistant. (This is where having a rain resistant detector is a real help) And while I don’t relish hunting in a drizzle, I made an exception; I needed to get out and swing the coil.

Detector Set Up:

EQX800, Mode – Park 1, 5-tones, Iron bias 2, Recovery 6. Sensitivity was maxed out today at 25. The EMI was eerily non-existent. 11” coil.
I had a little more than 90 minutes to hunt. After 45 minutes of carefully searching along an area I’ve spent little time hunting, I finally had a good deep target. Target ID was a solid 20-21. Depth gauge was at 5 triangles (maxed out) which denotes a coin sized target deeper than 200mm or approximately 8”.

I cut an appropriately sized plug and removed several inches of dirt which I placed on my drop cloth. Target still in the bottom / side of the hole. A couple more inches of dirt removed revealed the edge of a copper coin that I had caught with the lesche. Rats. I measured the coin at nearly the full depth of my pinpointer; 8 ½”, sitting at a 45* angle. Rubbing away a little mud revealed the Wreath and Shield of an raggedy IHC. Getting a date had to wait until I returned to the car 45 minutes later. 1895. Nice. First old coin of the year breaks into the 1800’s. Nothing else old turned up.

It’s going to be a good year. As I type this, looking out at my window a day later, it looks like a winter wonderland, big snowflakes coming down gathering on the whitened lawn. Back to winter for a few days. eye rolling smiley

Time to finish packing the MXT All-Pro in preparation for a new home.
