Hey there dirtdigger,
I'm coming up on two years with my 800 and I've found the grip comfortable. I have average sized hands and wear a regular "large" glove. When hunting I try to keep a loose grip so I don't have tension in my fingers / hand. I find the "weight" of the detector rests somewhat on the top of my grip or index finger and thumb. The coil should generally be close to my feet so I don't have excessive pressure on my hand / fulcrum of the balancing of the searchrod. I don't use an arm cuff band, but rather have just enough nose heaviness for the cuff to have slight upward pressure on the underside of my forearm. This weight is adjustable by collapsing or extending the search rod.
If you release your pinkie finger from the grip while you're swinging the coil back and forth, what happens? Does the coil come up from the ground? If you're using your pinkie and ring finger to try and keep the coil on the ground you can try a couple things. First would be to extend the coil out just a touch and see if the balance improves. If this is awkward for some reason, try using an arm cuff strap. This will take the pressure off the hand and place it on the top of your forearm where the strap comes across.
This is how I hunt with my Fors CoRe and the small 5" OOR coil. It is the only detector I've ever had to use an arm strap with. Without the strap my hand tires of trying to hold the coil down to the ground.
Good luck.
Rich
