Jamie:
I have a confession to make. I am only 5’6”, so I usually have my coil shafts adjusted so the coil is more strait down my arm close to my feet. It just feels comfortable to me. It also keeps my swings short and controlled.
With all of that said, I did the strait shaft conversion on my 340 not too long after I purchased it. Because I am not tall it works perfectly for me.
All too often I see people with an over-extended rod length who make very broad and very fast swings from left-to-right. I used to stand at 6' but with my bad back , combined with that shrinking-with-age and leaning on my cane, the ground seems to have snuck in closer. But I still use the same techniques I've relied on for many, many years, and that it to keep the rod shorter so the search coil is about 12" to 16", maybe, in front of my leading toe. And my side-to-side sweeps are typically 24" to 30" and on a wide-open area I might make a 36" to 40" sweep but control it and make sure I overlap.
Jamie:
We have a threat of some snow Thursday night into Friday, but the rest of the weekend looks fine.
Hopefully you have some great weather to venture outside.
Well, it is 9:00 AM, mostly sunny, 0 wind speed and 40°. I'm headed out shortly w/Miss Rikki to meet up with OregonGregg and Molly and Boomer so we can have a group of 10 or less and we'll stay more than a 'social distance' 6 feet apart as we hunt about a ghost town in fresh air. It's headed to a dry 68° today. I hope you enjoy your snow while I go enjoy 'spring weather!'
