2nd Buffalo in ten days - Trying out a new coil

April 23, 2020 10:54AM
Received my new 12 x 15 elliptical coil for the EQ800 yesterday. It has snowed every day this week with lows in the high 20's, cloudy, wet and not great detecting weather. But I wanted to try out the coil, so I set up the machine and headed to a soccer field close by. I left all my settings as I've been running the machine, except that I switched from 50 tones to 5 tones (horseshoe on) just because I am really familiar with the performance in that mode. I was expecting that the coil would seem really heavy and cumbersome, and willing to endure some of that for the coverage and depth. However, only using it for a little over an hour (temp 34 deg.and windy with flags flying straight out) it didn't seem much different than the 11 inch. I do run with the coil fairly close to my feet, so that helps.

Coil performance was excellent with very good separation, and pinpointing comparable to the 11 inch coil, maybe even better. The front to back signal is very concentrated into a narrow band that is easy to use in among medium dense targets. My very first recovery turned out to be a 1928 Buffalo nickel with a full date; first old coin that I've dug in that field. After a couple years with no buffalo nickels, that was a big surprise. Also recovered about 4 bucks in clad and a junk ring that sounded off like a silver dollar. I said to myself as I began digging: this is either something really good, or a piece of junk. I was right. Orange plastic cat showed up while I was digging. Buffalo came in at 11, fairly soft signal and it may have been tilted in the hole.
