Quick Outing - Cold is setting in.

Temps continue to go low and it looks like local snow Sunday. I awoke to low 20's this morning and thought I better try and sneak in an hour or two of coin hunting before the ground in my neighborhood freezes solid.

My plans started a little rough - a quick trip to the gas station to add air to my tires. !! Yes, it is THAT time of year again.

Once on the road, I headed for a older park I've been visiting this year. See my other posts.

Equinox 800, 11" coil. Park 1. Sensitivity 25, GB = 18, recovery 4, iron bias = FE2 -2, 5 tones. Conditions - cold and dry. Water has been turned off at the park. Ground was 'moist', but much drier than usual. Very firm. Park was empty.

After doing a noise cancel (coil up) and ground balance, off I went.

Lots of aluminum trash - pull tabs, square tabs, canslaw, and zinc pennies. Due to my delay, i had 90 minutes for hunting before i had to head home for work.

First good targets - 24, 25, with a nice sound to it. Deeper, but not near max. I pinpointed, cut a plug. and checked the bottom of the hole with the pinpointer. Right in the bottom at 5" was a small sterling ring. That was a welcome sight. Looks a little bigger than a childs' ring. but smaller than adults. I didn't have any other neighboring targets, so I'm not sure how that was missed.

I usually get a number of nickels, seems my 800 really has a nose for them. Unfortunately, the tab portion of the pull tabs is a conductivity clone for a nickel - 12,13. especially when they are folded over. I recovered a few of these. I was passing on shallower zinc pennies today due to time. This area is a good candidate for a pull tab clean out at some future date.

I finally came upon what I thought was a deep masked coin. I had a deep 26-27 target that i could slowly walk around and get pretty consistent signal, but right there with it was some iron tone that pulled a pinpoint off to one side. I guestimated the good target, dug a plug and at 7" came up what seems to be a rusted iron piece about 1/2" in diameter with a large rust stain in the hole with it like a long gone piece of wire. I was pretty sure there was a good target in here somewhere and sure enough on the opposite side of the hole was another target an inch and a half deeper. It proved to be a 1940-D wheatie. I was hoping for more silver, but it was a good find. I checked the hole for friends and nothing.

More time slowly wandering about. With a recovery of 4, my swing speed has to be slowed. Typically, i shorten the search rod to keep the coil right near my feet and i move forward slowly

I picked up a couple more deep tabs imitating nickels. Still not a nickel. Finally, I happened upon deeper target that was in the nickel range with an occasional flick up into the penny / dime range. Not a fringe find, but deep. I dug a plug and continued removing dirt looking for a signal with the pinpointer. Nothing. I stepped back and rechecked with my 800. It found a target on the near side of the hole. Back to the pinpointer and i removed some dirt from the close side and now a target. And . . . a rusty piece of iron wire. ? ? Hmm. I rechecked with the detector and the nickel target was still there, but now in the back .I removed some dirt from the back and voila. The pinpointer found a target. Just shy of 8" was an older tab. Hmm. I checked the entire hole with the pinpointer and there was a faint target still in the front, deeper. I removed some dirt and a 9" was a penny size coin. Pretty smooth. but with the glasses in the car i could read a 192 . . . something. There is a bump where the mint mark belongs, but it is a VERY worn Wheatie.

I'm attributing the penny to some fortuitous events as it was directly below the rusty wire and it was the deep tab I started chasing in the first place. Lucky is good. Makes me wonder how many coins , rings, and so forth are out there masked by tabs and rusty wire and so forth.

It was nice to get out despite the cold. Managed a few keepers and get more time in with the 800 which has become a good friend over the last years.

Weather is getting colder. Best make a trip to those spots you've been hoping to hunt before you have to wait for next year.
