I had a bit of time this afternoon and made a return trip - and set up my 800 the same way as yesterday.
And I forgot to note yesterday, I was NOT using the U (horse shoe / all metal) - Iron was left quiet, using just the 'threshold'.
I had nearly 4 hours today, enough time to explore beyond areas I've had success with previously. But I started in the same general vicinity.
I'm assuming by now you get the jist of my methods, searching for deeper targets more likely to be older items. While the search includes all items, I typically do NOT find items in the general pull tab / square tab area deeper than say, 6 inches. Deeper targets in that 'middle' conductivity range are investigated, which it why you see a few tabs in the finds. I did dig several pull tab tongues that i was hoping would be nickels. I did not find ANY nickels other that the V. Actually, I found just the 4 wheaties and the V and 1 corroded zinc penny that was about 5" deep.
I did chase 2 'bad' targets. In the group photo you will see a large and small nail. These were in the same hole and giving me frequent flashes up into the penny / dime range. I found the smaller nail at 8" and the larger nail below at 11". And the sardine can opener was at 8". I think the 800 did a nice job of not having me chasing too many ferrous ghosts while still unmasking some iron / coin co-locates.
For the most part, the areas I've hunted in this park appear to be original, meaning I've not found the ground to have been turned / plowed like a farm field might be. Newer items are shallower in the turf and older items are deeper beneath the turf. The Oldest items I've found are below 8". Items from the 30-50's are in the 5"-8".
I picked up 4 wheat pennies today; 41-S, 44-D, 45-S, and 50-D. All were between 6" and 8" and each one with at least 1 other co-locate iron item. One of the pennies, found just beyond 7" was immediately next to (almost touching) a rusty iron blob larger than it.
The 1904 V nickel was not co-located, but I did remove a shallow adjacent square tab that was making it difficult to pinpoint the deep target. I dug down to the V nickel carefully and found it just shy the full length of the pinpointer which is 9". I call it 8 1/2". It was a solid 12-13 target ID and was my last good target of the day.
The weather was cool, but not cold. The ground where I hunted was hard / compact. Recoveries took some effort.
Hope everybody has a great finish to the weekend. If you have any questions, post them below.
