hi rich!
i am hitting deep targets with both coils i like to use the 8' because it does balance little better than the 12,but,again both coils separate well and go deep!
i have slightly mineralized ground here in new england,so the lack of manual g.b is not a factor. this dog can really hunt..i laugh because honestly when i first saw it i thought it was a"toy" that red color was kinda messed up,BUT in my view, it could be colored "dog-doo color brindle" and i would not care.best purchase in a metal detector i ever made. love to hunt now, and the feeling of anticipation is back.i got my lithium -ion batt pack yesterday and now i can get 30 hours life on the batts.pay for itself in no time! ..i don't know to a certainty, but as you get adjusted to the vanquish.you may end up leaving' the 800 at home!

I'm going to have to watch for an weather / temperature opening here in the next week to get out with the 540. It really is an easy to use detector with some good DNA to it. I have a spot in mind that is pretty riddled with conductive junk. I was planning on hitting it with my 800 and the EQ06 coil, but I think I going to give first shot to the 540 with the 5"x 8" coil and see what it can glean from the field There are some keepers in the junk and from past experience I think some of them are within the reach of this smaller coil. We'll see.
It does have a familiar feel - especially since I use the 5 tones with my 800 in the conductive trash. The 540 / 5x8 combo is very light in hand, the controls are well thought out and easy to use. Display is easy to read with aging eyes. All I need now is some success out in the field.
