Great/excellent response Andrew!-----It says what I was (clumsily) trying to say for so long---and a WHOLE LOT more eloquently to. smiling smiley------If you could post a vid in this regard--that would be great.-----That way people can see/hear what is being discussed here.--------Del-----

I have both the 340 and the 540 with all the coils and have done some pretty extensive comparisons between the 340, 540 and the Equinox 800. In my Utah soil the Equinox 800 is still the king by a long way on both depth and separation.

Let me start with the 340 and 540. Both wearing the same coil they are almost the same in both depth and unmasking, The 540 has a slight edge on both due to being able to set the iron bias to low on the 540. The V12 is about 1" deeper than the V10. The 540 has more settings and features and to me is worth the extra money. But I'll tell you what if you had a Simplex and a 340 you would have your bases covered for a lot of hunt scenarios.

Now the 540 vs the Equinox 800. Now I've read a lot of posts where people claim the 540 is just as deep as the Equinox. Not true and if you want to see a video of the Equinox out doing the Vanquish 540 by a huge margin just let me know. Due to having more settings available, the Equinox 800 pretty much walks all over the 540 in depth and unmasking. The Equinox with the 6" coil is both deeper and unmasks better than the Vanquish 540. In fact in my test garden the 6" coil on the Equinox is deeper than the 540 with the V12 coil. The Vanquish and the Equinox may be from the same family but as Tom Dankowski pointed out to me in an email, the chips in the coils are different and therefore performance is different. I would say the Equinox wearing the 11" coil vs the Vanquish wearing the V12 is a good 3-4 inches deeper in my Utah soil. Why you may ask? Because the Equinox has recovery speed adjustments, iron bias adjustments, a higher sensitivity range, ground balance and it's DNA is just better. As far as unmasking goes in the wild, the Equinox with an 11" coil on can unmask as good or better than the Vanquish with the V8 coil on. I'm talking a 3D environment not targets on the same plain. Even on the same plain like a nail board the 11" vs the V8 is pretty darn close.

The Vanquish series are great machines but they don't have the same performance as the Equinox series. If you think they do, then ask yourself this, why would Minelab make a lower priced model that outperforms it's higher priced models. They wouldn't. Now if you have mild soil the Vanquish probably is about the same depth as the Equinox but the Equinox is still a better unmasker.
