A good report, and I know you would have a different impressions from your sights if you were using that 5 X 8 double D coil
Every detector, I don't care who made it and I don't care what they call it, each and every one will have their own strengths and weaknesses that we have to learn, understand, and get along with as best we can. Sometimes, however, there are the glitches that are annoying, that you noticed.
When I was first evaluating the V - 540 a year ago I worked it at several sites, including ghost towns, where I encountered a variety of non-ferrous targets. When I hit one individual non-ferrous Target I generally had a very solid Audio response and a relatively tight VDI lock on. And then I took it over here in town to hunt a park and very active play area. When I did, I encountered a similar behavior that you noticed when I came across a small stack or tight cluster of coins. Some were visible on the surface and some were clumped together at about an inch and a half in the dirt
I did not get a good Target ID response that would suggest a blended Target signal. A VDI readout that would represent a blending of the few different coins that were in contact or very very close to each other. Instead I got a poor response or you could say it was a somewhat inconsistent response, even though I could see them some of the time.
I wondered if perhaps they were over or close to some offending iron junk, but when I just separated them with my fingers to have just a little bit more space between them so that I could isolate them on a coil sweep, I then got a good coin signal with no indication that there was any iron masking. Recovering the coins, I could sweep over the site and there was no iron present. It was just a glitchy behavior of the multiple close targets and the circuitry trying to deal with them.
A couple of times I was close enough to grab a different detector I had along and check the target's I encountered and I noticed that the other detectors, from three manufacturers, produced a good clean audio response and a VDI read out that was good and suggested a blend of different conductivity targets. The Minelab Vanquish failed to do that. Individual isolated coins, no problem, but small little clusters of three or four or more coins, especially shallow, had me scratching my head.
