We always seem to read about folks getting a top-of-the-line detector. But there are far more hobbyists involved in this great sport than those who often post. Through the years I get a lot of calls or e-mails about older models or newer but less spoken about models. Even about units like the Makro Racer 2, Garrett Apex and White's Classic ID which are older, newer, or current, but not top'end. This applies to Minelab as well.
Yesterday I had a fellow here who had a new Vanquish 540 ProPack with the 5X8 and 9X12 DD coils and wanted some help learning it and the differences compared to what he has used for years. That's the second time a V'540 owner has been here in the last two months.
He is used to using a 9V power Tesoro that gives an audio battery test at turn-on, but he didn't hear anything when he turned on the V-540 and it didn't work. Humm.
Well, it was about 7:30 am and he drove in from a cold and snow-covered area, and the detector was outside all night ... he kept the unit locked up in back. So, while we talked about the V-540 using my unit. It gave his new model time to warm up in my house. We checked it out and set the Custom program before he had to head off for the day to work.
I reminded him to not leave detectors out in the wintry cold, but be ready because after the storm arriving now, in a week or so we might get a modest warm-up and he can try out his new Minelab in a lot that has produced some keepers with his Tesoro.
He is interested in the mid-size coil I showed him, for the same application ... beach hunting. A bit more coverage for those wide-open beaches. I am sure he'll shop for one after winter when those beaches will be war m er, some snow-free, and ready for the summer crowds.
Why did he get the Vanquish? Because some locals use it, do well, and recommended it. I have heard from Vanquish owners who hunt a lot but never or seldom post on any forum.
