Yes, Gregg does love the FOR CoRe, but he also likes the ...

the FORS Relic (just needs to use it more), and the 'original' Racer and Racer 2. I also like the Racer 2, but (and Gregg will likely agree) there is something about that first, red-colored Racer that just seems 'right', and it is quick into action and simple to adjust. Just might be why I keep a Racer in my group with the little 'OOR' DD coil mounted. The Racer found me a lot when I first got one, and it can unmask well and has good depth in less cluttered areas with that nice coil.

Now, as for color, balance, feel, and in-the-field performance, I still think Gregg ought to reconsider the RED Minelab Vanquish 540 Pro Pack version. Yes, he had a V-440, and from the first time he tried felt my V-540 he liked the balance and feel and fact it uses 4 AA batteries. There is no 'perfect' detector out there, but for some uses the V-540 does offer some potential. Mount the 5X8 DD coil on it and work it in the 'fringe area' out away from the really dense iron contaminated ghost towns and it would make a great complement to the CoRe, Relic, Racer and Racer 2 group he uses.

For me, my main two Target ID and Tone ID units are the FORS Relic and 'original' Racer, but the V-540 w/5X8 DD is still a good-working unit in milder trash areas. The other nice thing is that it can collapse to make it handier for anyone to back[ack or or take it on a 4-wheeler scouting journey. It is also reasonably affordable, and don't forget 'simple', which might be a better consideration than the more expensive and somewhat complicated higher-priced XP and Minelab offerings.

Doing some in-home 'cabin-fever' testing would also help him pass the time until favorable weather returns, plus we would know where to find him.
