New sites, detector selection, and different techniques.

I know I have had times when I had to alter my search sites, at least to some degree. Ghost towns alone didn't always fill my search list. I selecting a variety of places to hunt I found, long ago, that two of my detectors were always going to be useful at times, and those are my Tesoro Bandido II µMAX and Silver Sabre µMAX. The, knowing the the majority of non-urban locations i picked often had a very dense amount of Iron Nails and other ferrous debris, I tried and tested a lot of detectors to find a model or two that satisfied those needs the best. Those two in my outfit are the Nokta FORS CoRe and FORS Relic, especially with their smaller coils.

Then I needed a good general-purpose detector for a lot of the routine urban Coin Hunting and also decent for hunting private yards, torn up vacant lots, renovation work, etc., etc. For that I settled on the Garrett Apex for its light-weight and comfortable handling abilities, SMF for land or salt water beaches and four Selectable Single Frequencies. On that I use the 'Ripper' coil routinely, and have the 'Raider' coil on a 2nd Apex for hunting a plowed field, pastureland, rangeland, etc..

There have been, are, and will be some good detectors for many readers based upon the locations they search. Four of the five models I mainly use are discontinued, but that doesn't degrade the excellent performance they provide. And now with a couple of new models out, I know a number of detectorists are going to opt for a new model, even though what they own and use now might be fully capable of providing the performance they need. A purchase might not necessarily be needed, especially if they haven't put in the time to fully learn the strengths and weaknesses of what they have.

I do have one other detector I am likely to keep in my outfit, and that is the XP ORX w/5X9½ HF coil and I also have the 9" X-35 coil. I like it, kind-of, because it works 'differently' from the others. Thus, there will be times I feel it might provide me an 'edge' for some tough sites.
