I wish the best for you and your new business adventure Monte. Im just curious about one more thing Monte? Why wouldn't you just want to kickback and relax and enjoy your retirement and family?
Back about '77 I was diving across Central Oregon from Portland to Vale to visit my brother, Ed. He was a city cop in Vale and had a side business dealing in Antiques and collectible on days off to bring in some extra $$$.
I was also a cop and had a side business dealing in, what else, metal detectors. I had been trying to think of a new business name that would be catchy. Between Burns and Vale, in the desolate chuck of Oregon, you drive up over Drinkwater Pass and then you come to Stinkwater Pass and drop down and cross Stinkwater Creek. Humm, it made me think of a few surfaced or gathered water or wells we had encountered in our search of ghost towns and old sites. Catchy!
Well, I made it to Vale for my visit and let my brother know about my new business name idea. Buy the time the week went by and I made it back home, my brother used the name and had Stinkwater Wells Antiques, Stinkwater Wells Emporium, Stinkwater Wells Personal Defense and a couple others he used for a few years and settled on what I liked, Stinkwater Wells Trading Post. When he passed away in June of 2011, I acquired he name and the artworks he had, and I used the cowboy character he had been using with the business name, modified for my detector business.
Ever set up at a Sportsman's Show or Trade Show or a GPAA Show? Hand-out business cards or literature, and try to answer questions and do some hands-on demonstrations? I have, a lot, and one thing folks said when they returned to my booth was out of all the different businesses set up there, mine, and my Stinkwater Wells banner, were very catchy and easy for them to remember where to go. Of course they thanked me for my help and that was also why they returned ... and purchased.
Now for me. I am retired, 100% disabled, and health is more of a struggle this past year. I can't make, earn or work, very much as it will impact my VA Disability. But I can maybe get $100 a month or something meager as an 'advisor' or doing a small full-day seminar. We only plan to handle 2 or 3 detector brands, likely 3, and the purpose of the detector dealership for the three of us will mainly be to help off-set the websites and forums and such that has all come out of my pocket for the past 13 years.
Our plan is to stock some detectors and sell them at their MSRP rate. No discounting or drop-shipping. Carry inventory and price it at MSRP, for the most part. If a manufacturer has a special we will likely use that price, but otherwise it sells for retail. In the end a value for those who purchase locally.
But right now it is all a work in progress as we determine which manufacturers we are going to use, and which models in their line-up we are likely going to carry and sell. Plus working on the Forums and website re-dos and changes.
