9" search coils ... Balance & feel; Separation; Depth of Detection.

July 16, 2019 11:21AM avatar
As with any search coil on any brand detector, I want it to, and need it to, Balance comfortably and have a good 'Feel' for handling in a variety of sites. Some 9" to 9½" coils are too heavy, and that's not good. Some coils in that size range are a little heavier and the rod-mount point is located too close to the rear of the coil and that throws the balance off. Two examples of that are the White's 950 Concentric and the newer Nokta-Makro 9" Concentric.

Some of the better coils in that size range are the White's 9" Concentric spoked coil with the rod-mount closer to the center. Another round coil that is nice is the XP 9" HF coil that has the rod-mount about half-way between the rear of the coil and the center of the coil, but the coil is so light weight and balances nicely it still feels very comfortable as well.

My favorite of these coils are the 5X9½ open-frame DD for the Nokta- Makro models, and my favorite for the XP ORX, the 5X9½ DD. The Nokta-Makro 5x9½ has the rod mount closer to center than the XP offering of the LF coil, but the XP coil has a lighter feel and it balances very comfortably. It's the only coil I have for my ORX, and I am completely fine with it, although I would like to see them make a smaller 5" or 6" round coil for the Deus and ORX.

Target Separation is not just a benefit of search coil size or type. It is a vital characteristic of a detector's circuitry design combined with an efficient search coil. My two favorite Tesoro's can separate well, and I can guarantee my set of two Nokta-Makro devices will rival any decent product on the market, too. But they will all have to credit the XP ORX and Deus for producing some of the best good-target / bad-target Separation out of any products available.

And if most everyone hunted sites like I prefer to pick, they wouldn't be chirping so loudly about 'depth' - 'depth' - 'depth' all the time. Most desired targets are not deep anyway, and where coins and other smaller-size keepers might be, the vast quantity of trash targets will easily mask them or inhibit any ability to achieve any practical detection depth. However, with that said, there are times to hunt a cleaner site that can allow a little better performance and find deeper targets, and so far, I have found the XP ORX to provide very impressive Depth of Detection with the 5X9½ HF coil, and it's a special credit to the detector's impressive circuitry design.

Just my impressions on field performance I am getting.

Deus or ORX, we share a common appreciation for these Xplorer models.

No need to be jumpy about XP or Xp usage.
