“River” hunt

Sunday there was a nice break in the weather so I went to one of our parks to work on finding the 95 coins I need to meet my goal of 1500 for the year. As I got close to the river that borders the park I saw the water level way down, revealing river bottom I’ve never been able to hunt. There is lots of silt settled into areas along the bank so footing was dicey as I had not brought mud boots. I searched this “virgin” ground finding a few modern pennies, dimes, and quarters, hoping for some earlier coins from the days of the Fourth of July Water Pageant.

I was using a XP Deus with the elliptical coil and the GM Power program with no modification.

I poked along amongst the rocks and crumbling remains of the old retaining wall and got a faint soft signal that might indicate a quarter. Only one way, but repeatable, so I went after it in a spot of finer gravel. About 4” down I dug a 1990 quarter. Another sweep of the hole produced a similar signal, still poor but interesting. A bit more digging and out popped a modern dime and a 20d nail about 4” long and a 1/4” in diameter. I had not heard the iron audio, only the poor, short, repeatable one way high tone. This is the second time I have experienced this with the XP, the first time I thought it was a fluke or that I hadn’t been paying close enough attention. I’m still amazed this machine picked the dime up with the big nail in the hole.

On down the bank a little further I got a signal that could have been a penny, but as I dug into the mud I found cloth. Thinking it might be a zipper or a coin in a pocket, I dug more and found a sweatshirt wrapped around flippers, a mask, and a snorkel. I guess I’ll have to get me a Simplex+ . . .
