I'll explain why I am doing what I am doing, and the enjoyment that comes from moving on with these analog detectors. If you glance at my Signature below, you might notice that I am, and will continue, to thin out some detectors, all of which have been modals with visual Target ID and audio multi-Tone ID. I do like 2-Tone and 3-Tone ID but seldom have a need for more than that. Gone!
As I am working to get back to detecting more in urban settings, they are not only big grassy parks. Many places are renovation sites, old vacant lots, demolitions and such that often have a lot of debris, especially nails and other iron trash. Before I moved from Texas this past spring I had works a couple of challenging sites with several detectors, and the one that rewarded me the most ...
and brought a satisfying smile to my face ... was my analog Tesoro Bandido II µMAX w/6" Concentric coil.
And the only detecting I got in a week ago at our Welcome-to-Hunt Outing was using my trusted Bandido II µMAX, and I totally enjoyed every minute of it! And that is exactly what we ought to b doing enjoying the detectors that we use. I have been using favored Tesoro's for just over 39 years for one good reason. They are simple and they work well in a variety of applications. And the Bandido II µMAX and Silver Sabre µMAX were introduced 25 years ago next month and I have kept at least one of each in my detector outfit ever since. They work, and they have had a purpose. One reason I have kept a Silver Sabre µMAX on-hand is because the field performance is about the same as the Bandido II µMAX, and I have one I have used as a 'loaner-unit' for two reasons. Most friends and family who borrow a unit do not like dense trash and they prefer to hunt a wide-open grassy area. Also, they like the Pinpoint pushbutton.
As much as I have, and do, like to use my Tesoro's, there are a couple of reasons I am going to acquire some DeepTech models to be my main working units. The Tesoro's will be retired ro den display status at that time. From owning a couple of Vista X models and going with a new unit o be my main detector is the fact that the Vista X can produce a bit more depth-of-detection than my Tesoro's when using a comparable-size coil in the same challenging ground. I am not overly big on the Depth-Depth-Depth discussions, but the fact is, there are times when conditions are favorable and we can benefit from the added performance.
Two other features of the DeepTech models I want are the broad-range of Discrimination
acceptance to hear both ferrous and non-ferrous targets, and that's not an option with my Tesoro's. The other plus point is not just being able to hear the Iron, but be able to reduce the Audio Volume of the Iron-range responses to be more comfortable. Again, not a function with my Tesoro's. And to fill th niche of the Silver Sabre µMAX I plan to get a DeepTech Smart + Pro and just leave the standard coil mounted full-time. That will work if I grab it to scan a more open area, and it will be just what borrowers want to hunt old parks and such with to try and find some of the older coins. The Smart+ Pro also features the Pushbutton pinpoint feature than so many like to use.
Then the Vista X will fill the shoes my Bandido II µMAX has worn for decades, and I will benefit by having the full-range Discrimination 'acceptance' if desi5red, plus the 2-Tone advantage of Iron Audio tone, and better still the adjustable Iron Audio Volume control. The one additional plus, when I find the right time to use it, is the Alt. Disc. function. Plus, as mentioned earlier, the Vista X will also provide me with a wee bit of added depth-of-detection in the more open areas, and it will also have a good mid-size coil for it.
With the Vista X I plan to have four search coils. For my most hunted locations I will use the solid 5.7" round DD due to dense brush and heavy iron contamination. For the modestly-littered old sites it will be the open-frame4 they call the Super Six. Kind of an odd name since it is an elliptical design that is listed as 5.4X8, but they tagged it Super Six. The for most of the urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting sites I'll have the new 8" Concentric coil mounted and doing what a good concentric does best. The stock octagonal coil will be for working a beach or plowed field.
The third DeepTech I plan to get before I make some trips for both Relic Hunting and hitting some Gold Nugget Hunting locations in Nevada and Oregon, and that will be the higher-frequency Gold Hound. I'll have my Vita X for the Relic Hunting and Gold Hound for the Electronic Prospecting part of the adventure.
Now I just need to make sure the Vista X comes with the newer 6-pin connector design so I won't have a wrong-coil issue and I'll be fine. One thing I also appreciate is that these DeepTech detectors are their own analog designs and not a copy of a Tesoro. That's a good thing because they are providing very nice performance to carry-on and enhance the field performance many of us have enjoyed in the past.
