First is a repeat of terminology. Quite a few makers refer to a Zero-Disc. mode as All Metal because it responds to all of it, ferrous and non-ferrous. But some still make a 'true' All Metal mode that is Threshold-based and Ground Balanced and does NOT use any of the Disc. mode filtering. I prefer to have a 'true' All Metal mode.

Second, with a 'true' All Metal mode you either have a manual Threshold re-tune or an Auto-Tune to restore or maintain the Threshold setting. Some models. Like Tesoro's original Bandido, had what I consider to be a 'comfortable' Autu-Tune speed that worked well all around.

Then there are some, like my Bandido II microMAX, that have a toggle to select Normal (which is a Manual re-tune) or Auto which is a very fast Auto-Tune function. I keep mine in Auto most of the time but do sometimes use the Manual All Metal mode. I really have enjoyed this model since it was introduced 25 years ago this month, but if I could make any change, it would be to add a variable control to adjust the Auto-Tune speed to my liking for any site.

Third, we need to know the terms used and setting function. With the Vista-X the Gain control is a proper term because it is controlling the Gain of the received signal. With the Tesoro Bandido II microMAX, they labeled the control Sensitivity. That is generally used to describe the transmit power, but with those Tesoros it is actually the Gakn for the Receive signal. Also, by design, the Sensitivity control only functions with the receive Gain of the Discriminate mode. The All Metal mode operates at full Sensitivity and it is not effected by the variable Sensitivity control.

So I am going to work with the Vista-X when I get it to determine just what their All Metal mode is and the function of the Gain cotrol.

Relevance of "All Metal" mode? It depends on the terminology and design and use.
