Question Monte,
I am sure you are familiar with Calabash Digger's Cibola video showing no response on a silver half by the Cibola and the resulting brouhaha over it.
Yes, I saw it and as I was watching I knew immediately that calabash digger didn't have a clue about the proper tuning and behavior of a Tesoro Cibola.

I was of the opinion that the machine he tested is set for a ground balance that is a compromise value which is far off from the value of his very neutral mineral soil.
The model he used, the Tesoro Cibola, is a turn-on-and-go design which means the Ground Balance is internally preset. In theory, most manufacturers would 'calibrate' or 'adjust' the GB to a piece of ferrite to try and simulate 'bad ground' or a 'higher mineralized' ground make-up.

So at this point it has to be determined if that particular specimen he was using was either:

• Defective Possible, but I doubt it.

• Poorly 'calibrated' due to sloppy performance by the employees assigned to handle that. Possible, not expected based on all my Tesoro experience.

• Calibrated so that the Ground Balance was set properly for the supplied search coil it would ship with, and either:
a.. That coil went bad .. or .. Possible, but I have only seen that happen twice in 35+ years with a Tesoro.
b.. They used a different search coil that was well out-of-spec compared with the supplied coil and that could have thrown the Ground Balance way off (because it wasn't internally set for that coil). Again, it is Possible, and this I did see happen a few times back in the latter '80s to early '90st.

• Someone had opened that particular Cibola and tinkered with the GB trimmer and adjusted it way out of a proper setting such that it was too positive or even fully positive by that trimmer setting. Most Likely Probable, and has been the most often caused reason for poor Tesoro behavior that I have addressed.

In your opinion, is that the likely cause of the silver coin not responding or is there a true defect in the Cibola he tested?
No, I do not think it was a defective Cibola or search coil for that poor performance so many viewers witnessed. I feel the reason is because someone was guilty of opening the Cibola control housing and tinkering with the Ground Balance trimmer, setting it way too positive. That would have impacted the performance with higher conductive coins. Usually it only hampers detection of a Silver Dollar or even a Silver or Clad Half Dollar. I have seen some Tesoro devices that would even reject (not respond to) a Quarter and two that would not signal on a Dime.

A man-caused issue and not likely a detector design glitch.
