Teknetics Mark 1 results . . . .

I really liked my Mark 1. It was my first motion discrimination detector and was quite advanced for the time with Audio and Visual ID. George Payne was quite the engineer. I purchased the hip-mount version which was very nice in some ways and a bit of a nuisance in others. With 14 AA batteries riding underneath, plus the ample weight of the detector housing itself, it was rather heavy.

Having it hip-mounted made long days of swinging a coil easier. I had a platform that hooked over my belt that the housing rested in. But there were 2 wires that went from the housing to the search rod; the coil cable and the cable for the Pinpoint /search toggle switch. The pinpoint search toggle switch was designed to sit on top of the search rod hand grip, it seemed to be a catch all for dirt and debris. It didn't have a rubber boot to protect the switch from the dirt getting inside the assembly and causing problems. I replaced it a couple times.

I had to rebuild the Pinpoint cable due to flexing strain on the wires at the connection point with the search rod. There was a hard plastic cap the cable fed through that would crease the cable. Too, the original cable was coiled, which kept constant pressure on the ends. I ended up replacing it with a heavier duty straight cable with a better overall length and had some strain relief where it passed through the cap.

I started off hunting the yards of old houses along with the parking strips in the downtown Salt Lake area. The 7 1/4" coil did well, the 8 1/2" even better. It added about 2" to the depth that I was getting with the 7 1/4". Either coil was wicked good at spotting silver dimes and they had a certain tone to them much like I would experience many years later with my Explorer XS; the sound of silver.

In the latter 80's, after I had parted with my Mark 1, Gary Weicks did a little club presentation on a book he'd written on the ski resorts; Silver Dollar Slopes. Joe Rawson had been bringing in a number of silver dollars and halves as well as jewelry for the Find of the Month Contest and I believe that Gary highlighted his finds in his book. The coins were from the resorts, but up to that point, he hadn't let on where he was hunting to the general membership. I believe it was Joe that had all of those silver dollars from the resorts that you heard about.

5 should work but 6 is what I use to match 6 coins in the Half & Dollar stack.
