All of my dug nickels look like rusted slugs, the war nickels look pretty good. The only old nickel that cleaned up nice was one of my shield nickels, I think ground conditions are responsible for that anomaly.

Well Hombre . . . . .

Yes, the War Nickels do clean up better than regular Nickels do. That is because of the Silver (Ag) that makes up 35% of the War Nickels and the "noble" characteristics it brings to what would be a regular old brown nickel.

Silver is one of the 9 Noble metals. These Noble metals are; Ruthenium (Ru), Rhodium (Rh), Palladium (Pd), Osmium (Os), Iridium (Ir), Platinum (Pt), Silver (Ag) and Gold (Au). One of the characteristics of the Noble metals is that they have a much greater resistance to corrosion and oxidation than base metals. The two Nobel metals used in general circulation US coinage are Silver (Ag) and Gold (Au). I don't believe platinum was ever used in any general circulation US Coins.

The vast majority of the War Nickels I've found over the years also looked pretty good coming out of the ground. In the greater scheme of things we can all appreciate our 'War Nickels' as having that noblity that is missing from our regular old brown nickels. That is why they clean up so well. It's the Silver.

Hope all of you are having a wonderful start to your New Year.
