Nope, no 'Bad Wrap' for 5¢ coins.

Silver Nickels Getting a Bad Wrap? I think so.
Not really, it's just a matter of a 'majority rules' outlook based on the percentage of silver composition.

Most of our early 'Half-Dimes' were 89.24% Silver and minted from 1794 to 1836. In 1837 to 1873 they increased the Silver content to the full 90% like most of USA's 'real' Silver Coins contained. Those 'Half-Dimes' or small, thin 5¢ pieces weighed 1.35 grams for the early mintage and 1.34 grams for the higher silver content mintage.

These were compared to the Canadian 5¢ Coins or "Fishscale," which weighed about 1.16 grams and minted from 1858 to 1919 that contained 92.5% Silver, and 1920-1921 they were reduced to 80% Silver. Those were the ONLY Canadian 5¢ coins that contained any Silver, and in all cases it was a predominant amount.

We have to note, too, that a lot of early coins for Canadian circulation were minted in England or ??? until there was a Royal Canadian Mint to handle making money for our Northern Neighbors. Sometimes, if we try to check a coins mintage era, they only reflect the R.C.M production and not the 'foreign' mintage coins. From what I could quickly glean near midnight after being awake for over 22 hours, is the following:

Canadian 10¢ Coins: From 1858 thru 1919 they were comprised of 92.5% Silver, and from 1920 thru 1966 it was reduced to 80% Silver content. In part of 1967 it was 80% then reduced to 50% and 1968 was all 50% Silver.

Canadian 25¢ Coins: From 1908 thru 1919 they used 92.5% Silver, and from 1029 thru part of 1967 it was reduced to 80% Silver. Part of 1967 was 80% and part of 1967 and in 1968 it was reduced to 50% Silver.

Canadian 50¢ Coins: From 1908 thru 1919 they were 92.5% Silver, and 1920 thru 1967 they were 80% Silver.

There were some other Canadian coins that contained a predominant amount of Silver but those are the main coins likely to surface to Coin Hunting in Canada from what I could gather.

Drew, I agree with you about a thrill or excitement when I recover any older period coin, especially anything older than me or going back into the 19th Century. I get more excited today about finding a USA Buffalo Nickel than I do an older 'V' nickel, because when I started detecting through the last half of the '60s and on to 1980, I used to find a lot of Buffalo Nickels. But since the early '80s I have found far more 'V' and earlier Shield Nickels than I have the Buffalo variety.

But the main discussion wasn't about a coins age or rarity, but whether it qualifies as being considered a Silver coin and, to me and many others I know and have known, you have to have a significant amount, such as your 80% silver coins, to consider the coin to mainly be a Silver mintage.
