Monte, I tried the 8500 and hated it! It's nothing like the 8000 detectors which I've had many and really liked. It's been a while since I've had one and I can't really explain in detail why I hated it, except for all of its new features only one setting seemed worth using. I can't wait to read your comparison between the two.

I only had an opportunity to give an 8500 a short bit of hands-on with a dealer who carried them. Like you, I have owned several Omega 8000's and liked them. Still do which is why I acquired another last fall after my surgery. I also don't remember all the feature-set changes the 8500 had, but at the time there was only one added feature I liked and that was the ability to control the Iron Audio Volume.

The main thing I can recall is that while the looked the same and felt the same, using that excellent T2 grip design, the 9500 seemed too 'busy' and the worst thing was I didn't like the audio response. It just sounded a bit to 'clippy' and sort of annoying, especially when I compared them on a US Nickel and lower-conductive gold jewelry.

After reading your reply and thinking a bit more about it, I changed my mind about wanted to buy one or accept on in a trade offer when I list some detectors I am selling. Heavens, I have quite an arsenal of capable detectors for Coin Hunting and Relic Hunting as it is. I need to save a little $$$$ for travelling to the WTHO's that are coming up in May and June.

I hope you have some huntable weather over in your chunk of the country. By this time last year I already had thirty Wheat-backs, a WWII Nickel, a couple of Silver Dimes and a choice condition Orchard Saloon Trade Token GF 12ยข IT. This year I am at two Wheat-backs and one Trade Token from Mill's Novelty in San Francisco Found those during a brief three days we had to hunt semi-frozen ground the end of January. Today's forecast is 90%liklihood for snow, and there's a 40% chance for snow from Friday through next Tuesday according to NOAA.

When the weather gives way I'm at-the-ready, but it won't be to check out an 8500.
