Have 54 years under my belt and just starting my 55th this month.

It sure has been exciting to get to experience the progression from home-built to factory-produced BFO's, then TR's, TR-Disc. and then move on to VLF (Ground Balanced) models that soon incorporated TR-Disc., then VLF-Disc. To watch and experience the progression to Target ID as well as my favorite slow-motion models that arrived in '83, and then glance at my den wall with my current Regular-Use Team now thirty-six years later.

In my 'Specialty-Use' group I still have some great working units I occasionally take out to hunt with for a (short) while, and use them in my Seminars to show where we came from. Currently I have such old favorites as my Garrett Hunter BFO from the latter '60s, an early '70s Compass TR, a Garrett Master Hunter TR-Disc, from about '75/'76, and their light-and-handy 50 kHz American TR-Disc. from about '81. In addition, I get to select from a terrific assortment of recent or current makes and models that offer me a lot of versatility in some well-balanced and feature-rich designs, and all but my newest Fisher F44 has a very proven track record from years past.

I can't get out and about as often as I could from '65 to about '91, and my mobility and health struggles limit how far I can travel afoot to work some favorite larger areas, but I still try to maintain the same level of excitement for every outing I make, and the same appreciation for every good find I recover. Fond memories keep me refreshed with the wondrous quantities of coins available to us in those early days and all the interesting non-coin targets we found quite regularly that many Hobbyists of today never see because they use too much Discrimination or rely too heavily on a dependence for a 'lock-on' Target ID.

One other thing I will enjoy in this 55th year of having fun is getting to spend more hunt-time with some of my favorite FrIeNDS I've made through the years. Local detecting Buddies, some I visit with in my travels, friends I've known since '81 and shortly after in my favorite metal detecting club, Trails West Artifact Society, and most certainly the good folks who participate in the annual Welcome-to-Hunt Outings now in our 5th year..

Just 9 weeks from today, Saturday May 11th, we'll be wrapping up our 10th WTHO weekend in Ogden, Utah and enjoy gathering for dinner to introduce ourselves and share our enjoyment of this great sport. Hopefully, each take a moment to boast about a good find or two we've made, and reflect on their outing experience.

Yes, it's the People we meet, Places we search and Things we can find that have kept me hanging around this great outdoor sport for a long, long time, and I sure hope every reader sets out to make each day with a detector in-hand rewarding in every way they can to develop their own passion for metal detecting so they can also hang in there for a long and exciting ride as well.

Hang on! Spring's a comin' and #55 is about to start producing.smiling bouncing smiley
