How does one go about learning a new detector, especially if it is very different from what you've used in the past. ? ? ?

Does one slowly work into a new detector (dabbling) while keeping the trusty old detector ready at a moments notice or jump right into the deep end and become fully Immersed (Immersion) with the new equipment?

Interested to hear of your experiences.

Dabbling vs Immersion,

I'm firmly in the camp of immersion. The more time you get in the field making finds and the more real world testing you can do with the modes, settings and accessory coils, the greater your understanding and skill level will be with a given detector.

Take the time while you're hunting to do some testing over different types of targets you encounter and see how a change in your modes or settings affects the response of your detector for better or worse. The next time someone asks a question about how to set this or that, you can offer an educated opinion to help them get started and then suggest to them they do some experimenting of their own. thumbs up

Of course, this is a look at the world from my window and thus is only 1 perspective.

Good luck in the field with your testing.
