George, some of the 'negative' comments I've heard

Some just didn't like the layout, or the overall physical package and balance.

A couple of people, like me, didn't care for the solid right-center section of the 6" DD coil. They, like me, preferred it to be all open webbed or have the coil mount located near the rear with a rear area filled in. I prefer to see through an open-frame search coil.

Those who only used the standard 11" coil complained of it being 'nose heavy' for them.

Several I have heard from or read their comments didn't care for the assorted adjustment functions.

There were those who also complained of the audio Tone or more specifically the audio response.

Perhaps other than a mix of the above reasons, those I know better just didn't care for the Equinox's in-the-field performance in the trashier environments they hunt, combined with questionable 'durability' or 'ruggedness' when compared with the makes and models they preferred to use.

For the record, I was curious about their performance preference for other brands and have questioned that. Not one of them parted with the Equinox and went back to a Garrett AT offering. The bulk of those who didn't find the EQ-800 appealing for them continued to use or reacquired one or more of the following models:

Nokta-Makro Anfibio Multi or Multi-Kruzer or FORS Relic or FORS CoRe

Teknetics T2 Classic, T2 SE or T2+

White's MXT Pro / All-Pro

XP Deus

Three got, or plan to get, an XP ORX and check it out against what they have been using. (I plan to do that as well.)

Interestingly, as I mentioned, none I heard from went with a Garrett AT or other offering, and I was surprised that they also didn't go with a Fisher F75 version. Well, just kind of surprised because I prefer the T2's to the F75's myself.

Also interesting, and made sense to me, was that the only White's model they went with or stuck with was the MXT Pro. I know, and you know, that it works well against their Spectra series, and the MXT All-Pro can still do well and provide competitive depth in today's market. The only problem with it, and I heard from a couple of hadn't kept theirs and bought a new device, was that White's is still way over-priced on that model and many others compared to what the market offers from almost all competitors in the way of more recent feature trends (such as Iron Volume control).
