Rich: "Many targets are well beyond what I consider 'probe' depth and require a deep plug AND dirt removal. I cut a squarish plug with at least 5" of dirt on the roots. Removed dirt goes on a drop cloth to keep the surrounding area clean and ensure that all dirt can get back in the hole when completed."

Rich, I wouldn't argue with your technique. It is accepted by many as proper. However, I had an incident where another detectorist and I were working a soccer field. He had a large plug out on a piece of cloth and was piling more dirt next to it. The groundskeeper came up and saw this. He was VERY nice, considering. Told us we could detect the periphery of the field, but not the field itself. I'm sure holes were left before, twisting ankles ;-( Anyway, I saw the keeper coming and cringed. If he just had a hinged plug, we could have quickly plopped it back into the hole when we saw him coming.

All my plugs are hinged. thumbs up The DIRT removed from the hole goes on the drop cloth.

It really depends on where you're hunting, the grass / turf consistancy, and recovery technique.

Yes, those tell-tale signs can bring on some frowns.
