Yes, those tell-tale signs can bring on some frowns.

Ten or twelve years ago, when I was living in the greater Portland metro area, there were a couple of fellows, well known for night hunting old parks and other sites, or spending a day or two or three on a travel to work other places quite hard. They used Minelab Explorer series models, often with an oversized WOT coil. That gave them coverage, but as we know not the depth many often imagine on those smaller-size coins. The Pinpointing wasn't very precise, and many of the plugs they cut were larger in diameter, and usually with that very angled cut I described.

One location that they hunted hard were the City Parks in Pendleton, Oregon and I hunted there once with them and another fellow, but preferred to visit on my own. On return trips past there, going and coming from favorite ghost towns in Utah and Nevada, I would swing by to grab gas or grub and do some detecting. I hit other locations because the parks they frequented most left some plugs that were still 1" to 2" above the adjacent ground (not properly fitted and stepped down firmly) and /or often brownish to yellowish. Fortunately, most game back to an acceptable green grass color over time, but I am referring to over a few months since they were watered well.

I always do my best to not have to plug a spot, but there are times it is necessary so I have to figure out the grass and soil make-up then use the best recovery method, be in 'pry-apart' or 'cut-a-plug.' I carried a hand-held Pinpointer off-and-on for a few years and only used them occasionally, but that was after I had a plug open because the targets were, indeed, not in shallow positions.

I have been carrying and using my Makro Pinpointer full-time since January of '15 and do use it more often than I used former Pinpointers, but part of that is because it just works better. I do plan to get a PI Pinpointer in the next couple of months, and if it out-performs my Makro Pointer I'll maker a regular-carry change. (In case anyone is wondering, it will be either the Fisher or Teknetics Pinpointer designed by Carl Moreland.)

It really depends on where you're hunting, the grass / turf consistancy, and recovery technique.
