What should I use to look for deep silver dimes?

Not a joke.

George Payne, the inventor of ground balancing detectors.

Hey George,

When I saw the reference, I was trying to recall where I had read this before. I've read a couple different versions. My first discriminating detector was one of George Payne's finest; the Teknetics Mark 1. It was offered with a 71/4" coil (which was thought optimal) as stock and shortly after an accessory coil of 8 1/2" was available. World according to me is that the 8 1/2" coil was much deeper on silver dimes etc, than the 7 1/4" coil, no contest.

White's was selling most of their stuff back then with a stock 8" Concentric coil and offered a 10" coil as an accessory which the deep coin hunters preferred.

A second version of the "optimal coil diameter" for coinshooting came from Minelab when the first Explorer came out. It was deemed to be approximately 10 1/2". Of course, Minelab was providing a stock 10.5" DD coil on their Explorers at the time. This was later changed to the 11" Pro coil. This is a different configuration however, DD vs. Concentric.

I used a Fisher CZ-6 and then CZ-6a for several years combined and my personal opinion was that I preferred the 8" concentric coil to the 10.5" open Concentric coil. Others thought highly of the larger coil for deep silver dime hunting.

Anyways, would be nice to hear what the current thought happens to be as I don't have my old magazines any longer. LOL
