WTHO Ogden

Due to work, my first day was Friday, and the group was well into hunting an empty lot where some houses had been torn out by the time I arrived. I came away with just a small handful of clad coins, nothing old. But it was nice to meet the other guys that had come from all over and chat detectors and such. I hunted with my Minelab 800 and a 6" coil. The ground was rough and very HARD in places due to tracked construction equipment packing things down.

Saturday at the park, I arrived around 11:30 am and hunting had been well underway for hours with some keepers showing up. Mostly wheat pennies, but also some Buffalo and War nickels.

I brought along my 800 with the 11" coil using my standard Park 1 program along with the all metal Horseshoe mode. I picked up a 6" deep '41 Wheatie right off the bat. An hour or so later hunting under a very large old tree, I found an intermittent high signal in the low-20's at the end of a long piece of iron something. I was pretty sure it was a coin that had been missed due to the adjacent big iron. I could get a signal from across the iron, but not Down the Pipe, so to speak. I wasn't able to pinpoint due to the iron. Based on previous experience, I gave it a go. At 8" out came a nice 1920 Wheatie. Good find.

The group was finding a few more old coins as well as we moved about under the old trees.

Under another old tree, I got a real deep squeeker that was on the fringe of my detectors' range. It was intermittently giving me a 12-13 ID. In pinpoint, the target was narrow from all directions. I thought it would be an old nickel and gave it a go. A 1/2" diameter blob of rusty something came up in the spoils. That didn't seem right and I checked the hole with the pinpointer. A signal still in the hole. More dirt and a 1906 V nickel came up between 8 1/2"-9". Another good find and my oldest of the day.

That was the end of my older coins as we called it a day. Couldn't ask for a more pleasant day weatherwise. I had a pretty good handful of clad to go with my 3 older coins. We gathered over at a local restaurant for a late lunch / early dinner and had a chance to visit. Glad I was able to make it and a big thanks to Monte for putting things together.
