Re: Tom's Gold Coin success and thoughts forthe rest of us.

May 31, 2019 11:12AM
I hunt with Tom_in_CA. I believe he's actually up to 15 gold coins now, I've personally watched him dig three, one probably could've been mine but I got bored at the spot we were digging and wondered off to "greener" pastures - lol

It's all location. The above coin I alluded to was dug at an old defunct mineral springs resort in California, the other two were from sites that Tom and I did a ton of research on. Both were trading posts. My one and only gold coin I dug was at another site that we did a lot of research on and it was really difficult to find (took several recon trips to locate the actual X marks the spot). Tom's philosophy on finding gold coins is simple, go to areas that were commercial concerns, where money was being exchanged, and you astronomically increase your odds of finding them. So he looks for stage stops, trading posts, etc. Of the 15 gold coins he dug (I've seen them all and he explained where each one came from) the majority of them came from said commercial sites, demo sites and a couple I believe were found while beach hunting during erosion events around the Monterey beach areas.

So while you could find them in a park, the odds are pretty stacked against you. Move to stage stops and trading post type sites and you increase your odds astronomically. The site I found my gold coin at, which turned out to be a rare 1865-S $5, PCGS reports less then 100 are known to exist (it's a pricey coin) was a stage stop in the middle of the desert. I captured it live: [www.youtube.com]
This same site also produced another rare coin, a 1860-S seated quarter, 56,000 minted.

Research and location are key IMHO.

Best,
Brian

I believe he's at 12 or maybe 13 Gold Coins now. In his favor if the fact he lives in and detects mostly in California, and works a lot of older places down there, plus California had a lot of gold coin activity. Carrying and spending and coin loss. Since I posted this thread one more person I personally know and hunt with, informed me of their good fortune and sent an e-mail photo of his/her find-of-a-lifetime. She/he also used more of an 'entry level' detector to score that reward.

By request I was asked not to divulge their name, just like the L.G. I referenced to in my post. His initials were all he wanted me to divulge, but he did say I could mention his gender. As for me, the one, and only one, gold coin I have found was in the small town where I was the Chief of Police. I hunt a lot of towns, the older the better, and I seek any and all renovation work I can. I take more of a Beep-and-Dig approach and try not to 'cherry pick' or be too selective because I hope to find keepers others have left behind.

I have concentrated on hunting ghost towns and other popular-use early era sites since May of '69, and especially concentrated on ghost towns since July of '83. Only hit 3 or 4 old places in California, but many, many ghost towns, pioneer and military encampments, homesteads, recreation sites and dance hall locations in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Washington and Wyoming, but heavily concentrated on places in Oregon, Utah and Nevada. All places with the potential, but so far the only Gold Coin I have chanced upon was the one in 1978.

54 Years and 2½ Months of very dedicated Avid Detecting, but only one Gold piece. But I haven' given up, and I'll hang in there as long as I can to put in the effort to try and up that number. We just never know when or where we'll chance upon a special find.

Cindy, please read the replies before you respond. Also, if you will, quit with the 'woman' talk.
