forgive me if I'm not real excited :-)

Forgive me if I’m not excited about these “new” detectors coming.

They are JASFM (just another single frequency machine). Albeit with the ability to change that frequency.

I have to agree with Steve Herschbach, if the detector doesn’t have a new patent attached to it, it isn’t really “new”.

They really are just like White’s “advancements” – same ole VLF, in a different package – generally lighter and well balanced (which is a good thing).

The only really innovative detector to come along in the last couple of years is the Equinox series. Multi-IQ is not just marketing blather. It really can give more accurate ID at depth, and is not as critical regarding ground balance. The “secret sauce” is in the simultaneous multi frequency transmission, and their proprietary analysis of the returned signal. It too is light weight (and with an after market carbon fiber shafts, extremely light weight, and with counter balance, perfectly balanced). At the price, it is unbeatable.

Compared to detectors of the past, IMO, the real advancements in detectors have been in 1) ID accuracy. 2) Recovery time between targets. 3) Overall weight. 4) Support of wireless headphones. 5) Ability to upgrade the firmware. 6) Waterproof as another bonus.

I started with a BFO. Moved up to VLF/TRs. Then to ground balance/motion discriminators. All current detectors are based on the latter technology. The dual frequency detectors (DFX, Fishers, V3i etc) were a step forward in discrimination ability. In order to get maximum depth with a VLF machine, on a salt water wet/mineralized beach, you must have at least a dual frequency machine. It has to be capable of rejecting both the salt water (looks like foil) and the mineralization (the usual ground effect).

There’s no doubt that given clever software analysis, one can better determine what a target is. That was the innovation of Minelab’s FBS/BBS/Multi-IQ.

Looking at the advancements, one by one:
1) ID accuracy. As pointed out above, using more than one frequency has the advantage of being able to determine more accurately what a given target is. A discriminating VLF detector uses the returned phase shift and amplitude to guess what a target may be. Doing this at more than one frequency enables it to get a more accurate determination.

2) Recovery time between targets. The analog machines with only 2 filters did great at this. But when detectors went digital, response times slowed depending upon how fast they could analyze and report the results. They’ve gotten much faster now and have caught up to the analog machines, once again, due mainly to faster micro processors and more clever signal analysis.

3) Overall weight. Seems all the manufacturers (even Whites) have finally caught on to this.

4) Support for wireless headphones. Once you’ve used wireless, you never want to go back. No more tangled cords, when you kneel to dig.

5) Ability to upgrade. Since most detectors have gone DSP (digital signal processing), all functions and analysis is done in software. The algorithms used to process data can now be upgraded over USB in many detectors.

6) Waterproof. Didn’t use to be many of these around before.
