Re: The EQ800 - Does it qualify for Monte's House of Horrors ?

May 31, 2019 07:26PM
Rich, I just got my 800 a couple months ago. I have very little real experience with it in the field. Last I had it out was in Ogden with Monte. He took us to his old stomping grounds. The park has been re-sodded, and I picked up a modern pull tab at 5" in the ground - with 3" of grass on top of that. I didn't have much time to hunt, so I kinda gave up, because I've seen this sort of scenario before. Anything old was rare and deep and I didn't have enough time to exploit it.

I wanted to get a trial run in Eastern Or. with it, but was informed by Gregg and Monte that the weeds were too high, so didn't. The true test will have to be in Nevada. I've been there twice before and am familiar with the place, and now we have some maps to work with, so I'm optimistic.

However, I have done extensive scientific testing with it (you know, spreadsheets and all smiling smiley ) It performs terrific, on the nail board test, and with rusted can slaw - the type you find in ghost towns (I kept some for the purposes of testing).

My thoughts on the 800. I've owned a lot of detectors since the 1960's. Mostly leaned towards Whites since I liked the way they sounded and operated. I did have a Minelab Explorer II and Etrac at one time. Just couldn't get used to them. I even had an XP Deus. Honestly I don't detect as much as I used to and didn't like most of these modern detectors because of the obtuse menu systems that had to relearn every time I went detecting. I don't think Minelab has ever made a balanced detector. The Equinox is different. I think it is a breakthrough detector. The menu system is intuitive and something that is easy to pick up and remember, IMHO. On top of that, with the after market carbon fiber shaft and counterweights from Steve's Detector Shafts, it is VERY light to handle and balanced! For most of my detecting career, I used a hip mount. This thing is lighter than the aluminum shaft and coil I used to swing. On top of that, you add the Multi-IQ technology which gives better ID at depth (and should be killer on our NW beaches), the built in, light Li-Ion battery, the wireless headphones, waterproof, fast recovery speed, the ability to operate 5 frequencies independently - whats not to like?

Monte's house of horrors is no match for my new (experimental / beta) technique! smiling smiley

For the Nevada trip, I'm setting up the 800 thus and so: 2 tones, tone break at 6, recovery speed 6, iron bias 0, horseshoe, no discrimination, iron tone 1, all others 25 (I want to hear the iron). If I get an iron signal, I will remove the iron (with a powerful magnet) and then re-sweep that area. If I get a non ferrous signal, I will dig. That's the plan. It is my contention that most goodies (if still there), since these towns have been previously pounded, are masked by iron. I will use the 6" coil mostly, because I think the majority of hunting is now in the bushes, where nature has taken over.
