Re: Stages of Old - It's all about the Dime.

J.T. brought up an interesting subject that got me thinking about what I consider an Old Coin Find.

I kinda use the US dime as my measuring device for approaching old.

I think of the silver coin era as the beginning of old- The Silver Roosevelt dime - 1964 back to 1946.

I think of the Mercury Dime as medium old 1945-1916. This era includes the Walking Liberty Halves, Standing Liberty Quarters, Buffalo Nickels and Wheat Cents. I think these are some of our (USA) most beautiful coins and always a treat to find.

I think of the Barber Dime as old, 1916 - 1892. This era is where I think of coins as OLD; 100+ years old. This era includes the Barber Series of dimes, quarters and halves, Morgan Dollars and the V nickels and Indian Head Cents.

I think of the Seated Dimes as bonus old - 1891 - 1837 This era includes the older V Nickels, Shield Nickels, older Morgan Dollars and the Seated series of Half Dimes, Dimes, Quarters, Halves and Dollars and some of the odd coinage like the 3 cent pieces and 20 cent pieces.

Interested to know the measuring sticks of our neighbors to the North, Canada, our friends in Europe, Australia, and other parts of the world.

Rich -

For me, the newest that can make it in the binder is Wheats and silver 1964 and older. That's the upper limit. But mostly sticking with old ghost towns I don't fight that problem too often.

My "Stages of Old" are mainly tied to "Periods of Activity."
