Re: Detector of the Year - EQ800, but prob not for long

June 23, 2019 01:52PM avatar
Until Nokta comes out with their simultaneous machine ( hopefully next year) Then it will be fun to see how each compares. I'm pretty sure the Nokta machine will have a much better build quality. The 800 for what the machine cost is very cheaply put together. Monte's $200 Fisher F44 has a better build quality to it. But I guess you can spend more and get the carbon fiber rod set-up like some are doing.

But in the meantime, I'll stick to my single and simple freq. machines as they seem to work pretty well.

Detector of the Year - EQ800 ! ! ! ! Well, maybe not everybody's detector of the year, but I have enjoyed my 800 for the last 14-15 months.

Of course, I've already shared a number of thoughts on my 800 over on the MINELAB tab, so, I don't need to repeat. Glad you like yours George. thumbs up

Rich -

IMHO, "simple" is an obsolete criteria today. What is “simple” anymore?

Your TV digital recorder?
Your cell phone?
Your computer?
Even digitally controlled kitchen items are not simple anymore!
Why should your detector be any different???

Minelab made the statement that the Equinox obsoletes all single frequency detectors. I think that it mostly does!

1) It can operate at 5, 10, 15, 20 or 40KHz individually – with the press of one button. That covers 95% of all detectors on the market.
2) It can operate in 2, 5, or 50 tone, ferrous/non-ferrous, no discrimination, and control the iron volume.
3) It can hunt parks/schools as well as any other machine on the planet.
4) It can hunt mineralized salt water beaches – even under water.
5) It is light weight and FAST.

Learning to operate it is not difficult at all. No harder than programming your digital sprinkler system. The modes and settings are pretty intuitive. Enough so that I feel I can put the detector down for 6 months, pick it up, and go hunting right away – unlike some other detectors I’ve had with non-intuitive settings and multiple sub menus.

If you are willing to buy 5 different detectors for 5 different hunting scenerios such that you don’t have to change a few settings on one detector, that’s individual preference. If, like me, you want a minimum number of detectors and one that can do most everything very well, then you need a modern detector with variable parameters, and the capability of performing a variety of hunting types.

Monte, you didn’t mention that with just 1 (one) tweak to one hunt mode, we discovered the Nox 800 passed all of your important tests, like the nail board, and the nail over the brass button. Therefore is is a very good ghost town machine as well.

It may appear I’m trying to sell folks on the Nox. I am not. I’m simply pointing out that *I* believe, ‘simple’ doesn’t cut it anymore, and that you can own one detector that can do it all – just with a little learning curve, like every other digital/internet connected electronic item today. I admit, it took me a while to get used to "menus" - its that old dog & kicking and screaming thing smiling smiley

The Equinox 800 isn't all that expensive for what it offers.
