Pick a detector, Go Hunt.

Until Nokta comes out with their simultaneous machine ( hopefully next year) Then it will be fun to see how each compares. I'm pretty sure the Nokta machine will have a much better build quality. The 800, for what the machine cost, is very cheaply put together. Monte's $200 Fisher F44 has a better build quality to it. But I guess you can spend more and get the carbon fiber rod set-up like some are doing.

Gregg,

You're right. I think everybody should be using a Multi-Kruzer or Anfibio until the new Nokta Multi-X is introduced. cool smiley

Question, do I need to go put back all of the nice finds I've made with my 800 over the last 15 months? Might take some time. winking smiley

As for design/material flaws, I believe that Nokta had problems with the ears breaking off their early Racer coils? Am I wrong? Their excellent Customer Service group replaced them for the owners. I do believe that Nokta upgraded the materials/design so this would NOT happen in the future.

Likewise, I hear that the beach & shallow water/ hunters using the Equinox detectors are having some issues with the ears breaking on the 11" coils. Seems it is common for the shallow water hunters to use the detector/search rod/coil as a bodily support against the waves while recovering a target with the scoop. Puts lots of lateral stress on the ears. SNAP! Bet Minelab didn't anticipate this use of the detector in their design scenarios.

And I believe there was some sort of spec's mess up with the search rod or a significant quality control failure. My upper rod collar wouldn't cinch down on the middle rod completely. Some complained of the same issue with the middle to lower rod connection. Resulted in wobbles. Nobody likes that, ME INCLUDED. I made a phone call. Minelab sent me a new upper rod right quick. Problem resolved. Excellent service by the way.

Problems? True. But hey, my 800 was designed to be exceptionally light, WAY lighter than most other detectors, my Deus and Mojave notwithstanding. I can beef it up with an aftermarket cuff and carbon fiber rod if I wish. That will cost me, $$$. For my typical hunting, I don't need to do this, but I can if I want. Or I can buy several and stash them in the closet and use what I have until it breaks and then grab another and off I go. grinning smiley Bet you didn't think of that . . . . . LOL.

As for the 'detector of the year' header, that was tongue in cheek. Minelab has certainly sold a lot of Equinox detectors. Might even get close to Garrett and their AT Pro / Max series if it continues for several more years. And who knows what the future holds. Government might ban detectors, guns, any vehicle that can drive off a paved road, and owning a dog. But that's a whole other problem.

Till then, my suggestion is pick a detector you like and go hunt.

The Equinox 800 isn't all that expensive for what it offers.
