The Equinox 800 isn't all that expensive for what it offers.

June 25, 2019 05:27PM avatar
Matter-of-fact, neither are the Nokta-Makro Anfibio series, Kruzer series, or the Nokta Impact, FORS Relic or FORS CoRe, the Makro Racer 2, the XP ORX, White's MX Sport or MX-7 and maybe a few others that all have an MSRP of about $900 or less. Is that a lot of $$$ to spend? Yes, perhaps, at least for a lot of people. However these models, all of them, are certainly top of the line when it comes to features and modern, up-to-date performance afield.

Remember the crazy mad-dash to go buy models in even the '80s, '90's and early part of this century that were also priced in the upper $800 range to some current offerings at about $2600. An investment to go have fun, find stuff and enjoy life. The White's XLT had an MSRP of $899.95, and even the last current listing they had for the now over-priced MXT All-Pro was $899.95.

Do most 'Hobbyists' need to pay that much for a metal detector? No. Most 'Hobbyists' are really casual, part-time, urban-based folks who just enjoy the 'fun' of getting out detecting. They generally are hunting common urban places where their main trash targets are sometimes ferrous bottle caps, but more often than not they are dealing with modern low-to-mid conductive non-ferrous debris such as foil, pull-tabs and pry-tabs, candy wrappers, juice packets and similar discards.

Models such as a Fisher F44 or some of the other very affordable offerings can provide ample performance for those needs. Even some used detectors with enough features and decent performance offered in the last decade can work quite well for the 'average' urban Coin Hunting person and at a very reasonable price. But what about the more dedicated, active, and very Avid Detectorists? Those who get out to more challenging sites and take on an array of tough search sites that abound in dense iron junk and a lot of rusty, annoying tin?

Those folks need to go a step above the average Hobbyist and spend a little more to get a quality-built detector that offers better ferrous trash handling and improved unmasking abilities. Models like the MX-7, CoRe, Relic, Racer 2, ORX and EQ-800 are all capable models, at very reasonable and competitive prices, that DO offer needed and wanted adjustments and performance.

And the cost to folks can be very reasonable due to the crazy modern era of mail-order discounting and then buyers selling an unused new model, or one very gently used, for absolutely ridicules prices that are far below retail. Just some thoughts.
