My opinion: No, they really don't. ... An AT Max would be a bad decision.

About the best detector they currently have in their arsenal is either the black or orange Pinpointer.

Yes, the 'AT' series can work, but they don't work as well as so many better quality models from Nokta-Makro, XP, Minelab and White's. All of the yellow colored Ace series models can be lumped with all the lower-cost White's Coinmaster and 'Treasure' models which are easily out-classed in performance by even more low-cost offerings from Fisher and Teknetics ... and dare I even say the Bounty Hunter line. Just over-priced, poor designs with equally poor performance.

Look at the very limited amount of traffic on the AHRPS Garrett Metal Detectors Forum, and try to stay awake when you do. We had progressed in this great hobby here in the USA to the point where there isn't a lot of modern-day interest in good old Coin Hunting at the lower 'entry-level', and for very good reasons.

The bulk of the interest in detectors has been ignoring the higher-dollar models as well as the super-budget offerings. Sure, there are some of us that still enjoy urban coin sites, but not like in those earlier years of high coin production. By far, the better-selling detectors today fall in the $499 to $899.99 retail price range, and most are selling to folks with at least some interest and enthusiasm such as Active Hobbyists in this great sport to the move devoted and dedicated Avid Detectorist level.

Until we see some up-to-date progression with new model entries to be competitive from Garrett and White's, I really wonder how long those two will be able to hang in there before they sell to some investor or simply just close their doors. At least White's has the MX Sport and land-based MX-7 that are newer engineering designs and provide more versatile performance to help them along.

I've tried Garrett products, and owned, used and sold them way back when they were actively "in the game" and had competitive offerings. But their budget-priced Treasure Ace series hat progressed to the yellow Ace series, and those GTA series models that were bumped by the current AT series were, or have become, sleepers by comparison, and they've been putting out products to keep them in that group since ± 1990 or '91. The AT models were at least some help, but they are clunky, awkward, and do not match the performance level or feature set of so many models this past 5+ years.

Just my very active observations.

Actually, I found the mid-to-late 70s to be some of the better years.
