WANTED: Brand new AA Alkaline batteries, 4 of each brand for Testing.

January 02, 2020 02:07PM avatar
Mark started this discussion with a testing device he made to put a load on batteries, one AA cell at a time, to check for their potential 'Run-Time.' To do it right I suggested we Test 4 batteries from the same pack/lot and that would give us the 'run-time; for each of 4 batteries, then an 'Average' of all four batteries.

I found long, long ago that the big names in the battery business were not always the longest-lasting, and definitely not the most affordable. What I also discovered back in the early to late '80s, was that I could buy some quality batteries at a bargain price that provided very exceptional run-time for the price. I let hi know I was interested in this testing as it is something I've done numerous times over the past 40-plus years and I would pitch in to help.

Mark has the following batteries on hand:

Tenergy
Ray-O-Vac 'High Energy'
Energizer MAX
AllMax
Family Dollar 'Homeline'
Aldi's Active Energy

Tomorrow, Friday the 3rd, he should be receiving the package I mailed to him with 4-each of the following batteries:

DURACELL 'Duralock' ... Made in the USA .... Use by: Dec. 2023
DURACELL 'Duralock' ... Made in the China .... Use by: Mar.. 2026
SIGNATURE 'house brand of Albertsons' ... Made in the USA ... Use By 12-2026
JOBSMART 'from Tractor Supply' ... Made in the China .... Use by: 9 - 2023
THUNDERBOLT 'Magnum' from Harbor Freight ... Made in the China .... Use by: 12 - 2022
PT 'Power' performancetools.com ... Made in the China .... Use by: 11 - 2021

I included the Brand and Model, the Made in information on the box or battery, the Use By information. Mark is going to get that information for all the batteries that get tested. I also included my cost for the pack of batteries and Cost for Each individual battery. Useful information for comparisons.

When all the testing is done he will log all the names, dates and costs together with their individual 'run-times' and the 'average' for the 4 batteries. This ought to provide some useful inform, ation for most of us. The majority of my detectors run on 2, 4 or 8 AA batteries per unit, and I have more AA powered flashlights than I do metal detectors, too!

So far, we don't have any of the following brands represented for testing: Just some suggestions of what we don't have and there has to be more.

Nuon
Varta
Panasonic
Kirkland (house brand from Costco)

And I am certain there are even more AA Alkaline batteries out there in use by all of us. this is not a test for rechargeable or heavy Duty or standard batteries ... ONLY Alkaline Batteries.

If you'd like to help the cause and find out how things are going in the battery world, and that maybe a brand or two might be in our favor, how about making a donation? Just get a pack of brand new batteries, and either take 4 AA';s out of a bulk pack you open, or perhaps just buy a 4-Pack of Double-A batteries. Then, donate 4 batteries, of as many different brands as you might have on-hand, and I can mail them to Mark. I'll make sure the results are posted on the AHRPS General Metal Detecting Forum when readied.

The more brands represented, the more we might learn about some values in the power supply we use for our detectors.

Questions? Let me hear them. Donations? Let m know and we'll get things worked out.

Happy New Year!!

Monte
