Making great finds of older coins, trade tokens and 'neat stuff' is #2 on the list.

#1 on the list of things you'll find and enjoy are a blend of the scenery of the hunt sites and surrounding area, and especially the interesting and 'colorful' mix of the Outing Participants

tabman:
I'm coming!!!! I've never done any ghost town relic hunting and I'm looking forward to the experience and meeting some of the forum members. Lance says y'all are a bunch of really nice guys and fun to be around. I know that I'll pick up some really good pointers.

Monte:
I'm not the only one looking ahead to meeting you. We have a good number of people who have been making these annual get-togethers since the 1st WTHO in 2015. This is our 6th year of holding these events, and only 2 of the past 11 had below average turnout. I attribute that to a combinations of the site location and having them on a 'Holiday or Special Occasion weekend. Only two of us have made all but one of the Outings. I didn't make the one to Tonopah that OregonGregg covered for me, and OregonGregg didn't make the Ogden Outing last year because ... well, it was an urban event and he doesn't do regular urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting.

Of the rest of the attendees, generally mostly guys but we get a gal or two on several adventures, we have many who have made a lot of the Outings (to Nevada, Oregon and Utah sites), and most of them have a good deal of metal detecting under their belt, too. We can all learn a lot simply by pausing a while to watch others busily searching a site. Note their search coil technique and how they move about a site. We also learn by chatting with these new friends we make and more about how some detectors others use might work 'differently' than what we hunt with or see others using.

And there's no doubt that some of those who make a ghost town outing for the first time, to spend a few days learning and adjusting to a 'different' set of site challenges, who have never metal detected before or have only been an Urban Coin Hunter, will end this adventure with a new set of learned skills. Certainly, many will have a new appreciation for what it is like to take on "a densely iron contaminated site.' No, not the entire town sites, but when you start hunting in and around the most challenging places, it can get fun.winking smiley

As of this start to Monday morning, here are who we have planning to attend this 12th WTHO in just four more months:

Monte B.
Monte B. Jr.
Andrew B.
Eric B.
Tom B.
Rich H.
Lance H.
Darby H.
Dan H.
Ryan H.
George L.
Vic L.
Joel L.
Roger P.
Gerald R.
Bob W.
Jim W.
Gregg Z.

I know Jim W.'s wife is also coming but I don't know her name. And with four months to go I am sure we will get a few more join in the fun, too. Typically we have 17 to 25 people attend, and that makes for a lot of interesting characters to share experiences. Of this current batch of folks we have representation from the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee and Utah, bringing together 19 people from 9 states.

One thing I can guarantee you is that everyone will enjoy the adventure and learning experience from one or all of the six ghost towns to be hunted. I am always staying alert to learn something new about any detector I use, the settings chosen and the search coil I mount on the far end. Flying in from a far-away place and limiting yourself to bringing one detector, you'll have ample opportunity to learn more and experience more because I always bring along extra detectors so others can make use of something 'different' and enhance their learning experience. A few others who attend will also have an extra or two on-hand, too.

Looking forward to meeting up with you and everyone else. smileys with diet Dr. Pepper float
