What size nails were used for this test Gregg---and were they cut nails (the old square nails)---or newer (round) nails?--------I did this same test you described with large round (rusty) nails just the other day & my ORX with 9" h.f. coil passed it (east to west).----I think the best test in this regard would be with medium to large sized cut nails (which I don't have with me).----------Del

Went over and visited Monte today to look at a new machine he had and to pick one up. Also to try a test, so I grabbed my little Red Racer and the snake coil and NEL sharp and headed over. Monte explained the test, got my hopes up before I attempted the test and then squashed them like a bug.......and the scary part ....he was grinning the whole time.

Well, I came away from there with one fact and one fact only..........There is not a perfect detector made.

The test was two nails lets say laying in a north/south direction about two inches apart with a buffalo nickel between them. Most machines could hit the nickel in an east/west sweep, but not a north/south sweep except a Tesoro with a concentric coil.

The nails were mounted on a board about 1.5 inches thick. So the next test was to place the nickel under the board ( and nails) still positioned between the two nails. (the same position as before except now the nails are approx 1.5 inches above the nickel) Every machine with a concentric coil failed. My Racer with the two small DD coils failed. Only three machines with a larger DD coil could hit the nickel in an east/west sweep.

Surprised me a bit. They were the ORX with 9" round DD Coil, Simplex with the 11'' DD coil and last but not least the Vanquish with the 5x8 or 6x9 will have to ask Monte again what size is the coil on that machine. So next trip back over there I want to try my CoRe and Relic with 9.5x5 coils and see how they do.

In some previous test last summer we did a few and the Relic and CoRe won hands down against an ORX and Eq 800. But on this particular test my poor little Racer fell on its butt, so I am curious about trying some of the mid-size coils and see if it will hit like the other 3 machines did.
with their bigger coils.

Be ready for the outing. Monte is going to have some tests set up. I am not going to bet on any one machine. The only bet I will make is that there will not be one model that can pass them all cool smiley

In many ways I agree, however, not totally. Here's why.
