Zincoln's Whites results...and a Compadre

February 17, 2020 03:37PM
OK, get ready for my one and only novel on detector performance and theory.

After seeing all the chatter, i decided to go verify my Compadre, V3i and Sport against both the nail board, and the new dual parallel nail test (except i used a 2x4). This is solely as it would relate to a Ghost Town type environment.

Here is the spoiler - none of this matters much in the ghost towns unless you can ignore the tin bits - and i was unable to do that w/o also reducing the ability to hit good targets.

Test equipment - nail board, 2x4, 2.5" long square nails, barber dime, Jeff Nickel, and a quarter sized piece of tin from Lonetree.

Compadre w/ 7" (or 8"?) concentric discriminator coil. Set it to knock out nails. (overall, not bad)
- Can hit 8 ways easily on nail board w/ barber dime at both locations; Nickel missed on a couple. Didn't fair well in air after about 3-4".
- Dime Hits perpendicular to the nails to about 2.5 in depth, nothing down the pipe. If you spread the nails to 2.25" you more than double air depth.
- Here was the head scratcher - hit the nickel down the barrel at 1 5/8" well, but not perpendicular (Unlike any other machine and not matching the dime behavior).
- Didn't pick up a thing under the board 1.5" away from nails.
- Did a fair job of ignoring the nasty piece of Tin shown...better than the White's will.
- hit most of the time when laying a dime on top of a nail.
- Downside...little more chirpy even when knocking out nails in general. Less depth compared to White's. Placed dime on about a 45 deg angle and it did not hit well.

MX Sport w/ 7"DD C/J and Relic (winning combo for the Sport)
- 8/8 both locations on nail board at 4" air depth, both dime and nickel
- Parallel nails hit to 8" perpendicular to nails easy, but nothing down the pipe. Nothing under the board.
- coin on top of a nail hits easily, but not beneath a nail.
- 45 degree angle was easy w/ the dime
- failed the round tin test

MX Sport w/ 6.5" concentric C/J and Relic (was not as successful on nail board or depth)
- 13/16 locations C/J program, 16/16 relic program with dime. Hit all w/ nickel.
- both hit fine perpendicular to the nails, but nothing down the pipe.
- does better at never falsing on a nail head, but only gets 2/3rds the depth of the 7"DD
- also failed the found tin test

Tried the 10"DD on the same tests w/ the Sport, but it was a noisy disaster w/ all those nails as expected.

V3i (only used the 5.3 bullseye or 6.5" concentric). Accepting to -20VDI. gain 9, all metal 55, disc 85. 3 freq simultaneous/salt. Recovery 80. Filter at 12.5 Band Pass. (these all end up mattering as you can reduce effectiveness by changing any of these settings...i tried and verified this).
- Note that this required a slightly quicker swing speed due to filter chosen to achieve results.
- 8/8 both locations, on both the dime and nickel. Solids hits.
- Nickel hits perpendicular to or down the pipe on the nails, no problem. Dime hit only perpendicular.
- only occasionally got a signal when placing the nickel under the board.
- hits a dime laying on top of nail every time, or on angle.
- some limited falsing on modern nails in certain orientations coming across the head, but not on straight square nails (bent are another story).
- failed the tin test. I had the bright idea to use bottle cap rejection and guess what, it worked fairly well.....except it also reduced the number of positive hits on a good target. So, maybe ok to try going through an area, but you are going to miss some good hits.

So, my takeaway.
All 4 combos behaved a little differently.
- 1st choice is my v3i w/ small coil. Maybe a tad less depth than the Sport and 7"DD, but not typically my first concern.
- 2nd choice is the Sport w/ the 7" DD.
- if you are watching VDI's, you are going to leave most of the good targets behind out there (mine were frequently hitting near Zero, though good hits...the iron simply drags everything way down).
- the tin we all love out at these sites essentially makes all of this mute as my detectors won't ignore it no matter what i tried. SHOW ME A DETECTOR THAT IGNORES THE TIN without giving up good targets, and then i become interested in something different than what i have!

Back to some Presidents Day relaxation!

In many ways I agree, however, not totally. Here's why.
