As for me, I tend to enjoy some of the older and discontinued detectors.

I enjoy seeing how awkward some of the package designs were to handle.

I enjoy seeing all of the unusual control adjustment names that have been used (even though we can include some of the more 'modern' detectors, as well). I sometimes wonder about one electronic design individual who was involved with both design break-throughs, in the mid-to-latter '70s, when with White's to use "Terranean Attenuator", and later when at Bounty Hunter to come up with SPD for Synchronous Phase Discrimination. Most people had a difficult time pronouncing those terms, not to mention understanding what they meant.

I enjoy looking back and handling some models that seemed to be hodge-podged together with a copied, or poorly-copied circuitry by a manufacturer tying to stay in the game.

I enjoy(ed) handling detectors that didn't perform very well, just to try and figure out 'why not.' Just as I enjoyed those that did/do work and analyze 'why' they do, or 'what' they do differently.

But most of all, I enjoy using a detector that was/is well-designed, comfortable to use, and that provide 'Simplicity' and have 'Functional' control features, and back then, or to this very day, give me very good 'Performance' for a variety of hunt-site applications.

In my current, Regular-Use Detector Outfit some of those discontinued models include:

Nokta FORS CoRe w/'OOR' DD.

Nokta FORS CoRe w/5X9½ DD

Nokta FORS Relic w/5" DD

Tesoro bandito II µMAX w/6" Concentric

Tesoro Silver Sabre µMAX w/6" Concentric

(And I still have 4 trusty old-to-ancient BFO's, TR's or TR-Disc. models I use in my seminars.)

Oh, I own and use a few 'modern' detectors I have acquired in the recent 14 months, but some of them can't do what my 'discontinued' detectors can do for me. I have owned, and still do, some 'modern handguns and 'modern' rifles, but I still rely on some of my favorite 'older' or 'discontinued' models that serve me well.

Detectors weren't perfect back when and aren't perfect today, either. Matter of fact, more modern offerings seem to have more glitches in design and performance than we used to enjoy.

Just my opinions and feelings,

Monte
